Had to give this five stars because overall this is a thoroughly good and fast paced read despite an early concern about its accuracy On page 15 it says peoples were driven eastward by others advancing from Asia My common sense says this should be westward so it troubled me so early in the book but maybe my knowledge of barbarian migrations is a bit lacking I gained confidence in what I was reading as I continued and found that the book was helpfully filling in my limited knowledge of the history of France I did not find any further problems except on page 213 where what I believe should be the word 'vogue' appears as 'vague' An editorial error I would guess My only other criticism would be that there is not even a passing mention of William the Conueror I know he was a Norman so not strictly French but a few words to put the Norman conuest into context would have been appreciated Maybe the omission is deliberate because there is a separate 'Brief History of the Normans' All that said I can still recommend this book

Of 'Frenchness' emerged through years of history and it is this riveting story from the Roman conuest of A Brief eBook #10003 Gaul to the present day that Cecil Jenkins tells of the forging of this great nation through its significant people and events and and its fascina. This is an excellent read particularly for someone with a basic historical knowledge who wants a thorough and perceptive coverage without having to wade through heavy volumes of detail The book is really two in one; a historical narrative enhanced by personal impressions by the author of the culture and ideas of each time He is obviously well versed in French literature and philosophy not to mention in modern periods art film etcetera The author also injects a sense of humour in appropriate places ensuring that it does not fall into the trap of dullness that affects many other history books
