I must confess that I knew very little about Isabella and Ferdinand although their names are renowned The author GIles Tremlett is able to convey the story in an exceptionally accessible narrative style Full marks for that One reviewer has stated that the book could have been condensed into 300 pages I disagree and found the content sufficiently comprehensive to have covered the essential aspects of their lives without becoming tedious There is an interesting explanation of the role of Christopher Columbus and the sponsorship of him by Isabella and Ferdinand I learnt much about him from this book The roles and fate of Isabella's and Ferdinand's offspring also receives attention so much so that I purchased Giles Tremlett's biography of Catherine of Aragon which preceded this book by a number of years That too is an immense eye opener to things that are perhaps not general knowledge to the average non specialist reader
