I can't say that I enjoyed the first half of The Last Testament It was the irritating narrative of an irritating character on an irritatingly predictable trajectory of social and matrimonial dissolution However my determination or perhaps likely lack of alternative entertainment carried me through to a second half which I found a very satisfactory blending of the novelists art for dramatisation and the amateur historian's vaguely remembered facts and not impossible interpretation It speculated coolly avoiding the white hot dazzle of conspiracy theory
