I chose to buy this book out of curiosity for it was written by a very amiable schoolmate we both go to Harvard who cares so much for his community and is always open to sharing and helping others The title of the book did not impress me at first for it sounded like a self help book and I have had bad experience reading self helps that propagandized for some sort of actions with empty words loose reasoning and biased evidence However this book is the opposite of everything I have just mentioned I finished it in one sitting at a coffee shop undistracted by the loud music and the sound of people chatting incessantly around meThe book is beautifully written well researched and relatable Apart from a plethora of valid scientific evidence that shows the negative effects of inadeuate low uality sleep Franklin draws from history and anthropology to explain the changes in our sleep tendencies and our views of sleep as our world evolves Using himself as a testimonial he openly shares his personal experiences on how the widespread assumption that “sleep less work ” is a virtue turned out to exacerbate his sleep problems and hence reduce his productivity He also invents a tale about “the sleeping samurai and the dormant dragon” and refers to trending youtube channels and movies to make reading a fun and enjoyable experienceFor me personally the book has successfully changed the way I perceived and talked about sleep showed me the methods and products helpful for sleep management and actually convinced me to use them I no longer felt a sense of pride bragging to my friends about how little sleep I had Nor would I feel guilty leaving the library when others were still working through the night I would go back to my dorm room during the day for a uick nap despite my close friend teasing me about how weird it is knowing that I need sleep to function I accept that as our living environment and work schedule make it difficult for us nocturnals to maintain our natural way of sleeping sleep innovation technologies are not only good they are necessaryI also feel a deep connection with the author His having difficulty sleeping at night His past decision to sacrifice sleep to spend time instead on his study and social life His use of caffeine and sleep enhanced drinks to maintain his sleep schedule The constant pressure he felt living in a workaholic culture I believe this feeling of deep connection would not be limited only to meI would like to thank Franklin for having taken this writing project to “fixing sleep for American youth like me” and for his thoughtful and concise book For you who have read to this point thank you too I hope this short review gave you some insights and if you decide to read the book yourself I hope you would benefit from it as much as or even than I did
