Probably the best edition to buy and definitely worth the extra price even if you cannot read GreekXenophon was a near contemporary of Plato a talented and successful general with outstanding and courageous powers of leadership and a man full of practical wisdom and h umanity One reads in him the writing of a decent and thoughtful man His accounts of running an estate of hunting and of generalship are an intriguing insight into Greek life during the 4th century BC and there are many surprises even astonishments in the detail What emerges with resonance is his relationship with his wife Aphasia whom in many ways he regards as an eualWhat is of particular interest is his account of Socrates Xenophon has no obvious philosophical axe to grind and his biographical details of the life and death of Socrates suggest authenticity than those of Plato Here in his portrait you will find a Socrates who is admirable less stuffy and surprisingly religious even mystical In fact and contrary to the stereotype his God the singular is deliberate and reflects the text godhead is much closer to the Judaeo Christian god than Homer's anthropomorphic heroes
