An excellent book and a righteous real life adventure read Serving in the SADF on the SWAAngolan border was an interesting experience for all concerned and left it's mark on many South African males of my generation There were lots of good memories as well and Granger captures the spirit of the times wonderfully I live in the UK now so it is good to recall that old SA army slang ambience comradeship and raucous attitude from way back I'd forgotten about this book but was looking through my bookshelf and browsing through it decided to read it again It's that good a great recollection of the life and times of a troopie in the SADF

A well written and very courageous book Granger you exposed yourself warts and all and took me down memory lane in a way that I kind of hate you for just a bit This brutal conflict touched many who have bomb shelled around the world and I'm one of those fragments almost disconnected from the crucible that formed me I hope writing this gave you some peace it reconnected some of my pieces Not many will understand and fewer will relate but it doesn't make what you've written any less courageous and honest Well done and thank you

What an interesting life this man had and such a well compiled set of memoriesKorff allows for the whole experience telling of his early days in a detailed yet never boring way which introduces a reader to the main character in this life story and grows with himThe description of Parabat selection is superb giving a real sense of just how tough the selection course was what it meant to pass and similarly how Korff dealt with failure in special forces selectionThe active service section takes up the majority of the book detailing campaigns from the late 70's and early 80's in Namibia and Angola The combat described is fluid and sharp as it probably was fighting in the African bush with short and sharp engagements beginning and ending uickly You get a real sense of what it was like as a townie facing his first campaign out in the Bush especially in the earlier battlesSimilarly one grows to know and like the other major characters in Korff's platoon and see them mature with him to the point where one may feel bereft at their loss during combat as the author no doubt wasThere is also a great deal of background explanation to the purpose and reason behind the campaigns that the SADF were fighting at the time which means the reader with little knowledge of the Bush Wars never gets very lostI recommend this book as an excellent coming of age true story to those interested in the military and those who want to know about the Bush Wars This book addresses each aspect and provides plenty of laughs knowledge and loss for a reader from any of those angles
